["Firebag: Located 120 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray, Firebag, which takes its name from the leather bag used by Indigenous peoples to carry hot coals for fire-starting purposes, produces up to 215,000 barrels of oil a day. It’s our largest in situ operations, with about 600 wells and a workforce that fly-in from across the country. As the third commercial in situ steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) facility built in Alberta, Firebag produced its first million barrels in 2004 and reached a 750-million-barrel milestone in 2022. Proposed Firebag update: Suncor is proposing to extend the Firebag Project footprint to enable sustaining resource extraction on the entirety of the Firebag leases. Suncor proposes to modify the Firebag Project Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) approval boundary and the Oil Sands Conservation Act (OSCA) Project Area to increase the area in which the Firebag Project can access resources. Additionally, Suncor is proposing to update the Firebag Project approved production limits to allow accelerated bitumen extraction, increasing total production capacity by 331,500 b/d to 700,000 b/d. Cogeneration power at Firebag: Firebag’s five cogeneration units generate approximately 425 MW of low-GHG, low-cost electrical power. Any excess power that is not needed for operations is provided to Alberta’s electricity grid, which helps lower the carbon intensity for the province.","Fort Hills: Fort Hills is located in Alberta’s Athabasca region, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. Fort Hills is an open-pit truck and shovel mine. Operations at Fort Hills are substantially similar to those of our Oil Sands Base mining and extraction assets; however, Fort Hills uses a paraffinic froth treatment process to produce a marketable bitumen product that is partially decarbonized, resulting in a higher-quality bitumen requiring less diluent and eliminating the need for on-site upgrading facilities. The resulting emissions intensity is similar to the typical barrel refined in North America, on a full life-cycle basis. Suncor is the owner and operator of the Fort Hills project. Fort Hills began producing paraffinic froth-treated bitumen from secondary extraction in early 2018 and has a nameplate capacity of 194,000 barrels per day (gross) of bitumen. Its life expectancy is approximately 50 years based on current mine plans.","Base Mine Extension (proposed): The Base Mine Extension project is being considered to sustain the supply of bitumen to the Base Plant facilities. The project includes an open pit mining operation supplying oil sands to new bitumen froth production facilities. From there, bitumen froth will be delivered by pipeline to our existing Base Plant facilities where further processing occurs including upgrading into various product blends for market. The project will integrate with existing water, power, heat, fuel utilities and use existing approved secondary extraction and upgrading facilities at Base Plant. It is expected to produce up to 225,000 barrels per day of bitumen froth during its estimated 25-year operational life."]
