The robotic arm performs crucial tasks such as maintenance and repair on space shuttles and the International Space Station. Some of the most crucial components of the Canadarm2 were the wire harnesses, test equipment and grapple fixture, which were under development.\n\n### Challenge and Solutions\n\nThe organization leading the development needed a supplier that can build space-grade wire harnesses for the connector saver and the Power and Video Grapple Fixture (PVGF). Furthermore, Canadarm2 needed to undergo extensive testing before each mission, and a supplier was needed to build the test equipment and test racks.\n\nKanata Electronic Services provided wire harnesses for the connector saver and multiple 20ft long harnesses that contained 2 data cables and 2 power cables for the grapple fixture. Kanata also built electronic boxes and testing equipment used in the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for the Canadarm2.\n\n### Results\n\nSince then, Canadarm2 has supported dozens of missions. The success of Canadarm2 helped put Canada at the forefront of innovation and ingenuity in the space sector. The next generation Canadarm 3 is under development to support the Lunar Gateway for the Artemis program.","Customer Success Story\n\n# Safe-T-Ground Insulated Cable Project: To extinguish the risk of fire, we delivered technology that stays cool.\n\n**Premise**\n\nA major nuclear power plant operator in Canada supplying 30% of New Brunswick’s electricity was experiencing frequent failure with their RTD assemblies, that put the operation of the plant at risk. Like many CANDU plants around the world, Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) connector assemblies are used in critical temperature measurement loops.\n\n**Challenge and Solution**\n\nRTD cable assemblies are exposed to extreme temperatures and radiation. The boot on existing RTDs would separate from the connector causing it to bend up to 90o. As a result, the RTD circuit loop would either short or open. This prohibited the RTDs from accurately measuring the process temperatures\n\nKanata redesigned the RTD Cable Assembly. The new design used a 45o rigid backshell instead of the boot. The rigid backshell reduced the strain between the connector and cables. The cable assembly was also hermetically sealed.\n\n**Results**\n\nThe new design was successfully EQ qualified for 30 years. The RTD Cable Assembly has not failed in service and is far exceeding administrative limits and past operational experience. The success of the new design led to all CANDU NPP operators to switch to the new design. Kanata regularly supplies RTD Cable Assemblies to CANDU Operators around the world.","Customer Success Story\n\n# Xerxes Fire Protection Tanks in the Appalachian Mountains\n\nHomeowners in a recreational housing development in the Appalachian mountains chose the area for its idyllic remoteness. They quickly realized they needed to address the downside of the location: being 30 minutes away from the nearest source of water for fire protection. Two of the Ashton Woods homeowners (professional firefighters) recommended installing Xerxes tanks in strategic locations for emergency water supplies. A key element in their choice was how easy it would be to transport the lightweight fiberglass tanks through narrow, windy roads."]
