["Transfer Stations\n\nAt GFL, we constantly look for innovative solutions to our customers’ waste disposal and removal needs, to make the process as efficient and cost-effective as possible.\n\nIn-so-doing, we saw an opportunity to leverage transfer stations as temporary disposal areas where waste could be accumulated before being transported to a larger landfill facility.\n\nGFL was founded in 2007 in Southern Ontario with a single solid waste transfer station. Today, as one of the largest solid waste solutions providers in North America, GFL owns or manages a comprehensive network of transfer stations across Canada and the United States.\n\nAs our footprint has grown, we’ve taken measures to become an industry-leader in providing convenient local transfer stations for cities, counties, and remote communities. Each transfer station provides a local short-term disposal site, which allows the efficient transfer of waste collected by a short-haul garbage collector to a long-haul waste truck that will transport it to a landfill.\n\nThe creation of transfer stations has helped to decrease the distance garbage trucks travel when hauling, which in turn reduces the cost of waste transportation to dumping sites. This makes it possible for us to maintain low-cost, timesaving service solutions for our customers. It also helps keep larger and more imposing waste management facilities away from populated areas.\n\nThanks to our early entry and innovation in effective transfer station design, GFL is an industry leader in their development, construction, operation, and management.","Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)\n\nGFL is acutely aware that recycling is critical to the future of our planet, to reduce the amount of garbage disposed of in landfills and ensure that scarce resources are recovered and reused. As such, it forms an integral part of our commitment to protecting the environment, and supporting our customers’ sustainability goals.\n\nGFL owns or manages Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) across North America that use a range of state-of-the-art technologies to sort and prepare recyclable material for resale and reuse. Our MRFs employ ballistic screens, optical sorters, robotics, and more, to sort a wide array of precious reusable resources such as wood, paper, cardboard and plastics, thereby diverting them from landfills.\n\nTransformational forces of evolving waste streams and tightening market specifications in the recycling industry, along with increased customer demand for alternative and more sustainable waste management practices, have propelled GFL to invest in advanced technology for recycling solutions.\n\nAI Robotics\n\nGFL’s largest and most advanced MRFs located in Toronto, Ontario and Denver, Colorado, can process material at a combined rate of approximately 95 tonnes per hour with an annual capacity of up to 600,000 tonnes. These MRFs employ multiple optical sorters and AI robotics across their systems to optimize operational efficiencies, resource recovery, and end product purity.\n\nWhen GFL installed an AI-powered robotic recycling system in its Denver MRF in 2016, it was the first of its kind in Southern Colorado. Developed by Colorado-based AMP Robotics, the system’s sophisticated eye views, recognizes, and learns over time the various colors, textures, shapes, sizes and patterns of food and beverage cartons in the recycling stream, while the robot’s arm picks, sorts and places cartons for recycling. The robot has a pick rate of 80 items per minute, which is nearly double the average pick rate of a human, boosting efficiency and results. This AI robotic system is one of only a few in service in MRFs across North America (see also our Winnipeg MRF below) with the capacity to learn, collect data and establish recycling patterns.\n\nAward-winning Facilities\n\nIn 2020, GFL’s MRF in Winnipeg, Manitoba was awarded the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) 2020 Recycling Facility of the Year, which recognizes leading North American recycling facilities based on key factors such as innovation, sustainability and environmental impact.\n\nThe MRF was commissioned by the City of Winnipeg to handle residential recycling, support province-wide recycling programs, and meet evolving recycling demands. GFL’s technical MRF experts worked with the City of Winnipeg to develop a facility that would satisfy these needs, and implement an efficient, flexible and innovative system that could manage potential shifts in material composition, maximize recovery rates, and increase the value of recyclable commodities.\n\nThe Winnipeg MRF opened for operation in October 2019. At 80,000 square feet, it comprises approximately 90% automated and 10% manual sorting, and houses one of the most advanced fiber and plastic recovery systems in Canada. The facility is also home to a SamurAI™ fully automated sorting robot, designed and manufactured by Machinex Industries Inc. that uses sensors to distinguish recyclable materials at ultra-high speed.\n\nDespite current average contamination rates of approximately 15% for inbound materials, the Winnipeg MRF’s recovery rate is approximately 90%. In 2020, the facility recovered over 52,000 metric tons of material resulting in approximately 121,385 tons of CO2e emissions avoided.\n\nOur Multi Material Recycling Campus in Toronto, Ontario was awarded the 2022 NWRA Recycling Facility of the Year. The Campus is located on a 27-acre site that houses two single stream MRFs – 122 Arrow Road and 124 Arrow Road – that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.\n\nBoth facilities are designed with state-of-the-art technology including elliptical fiber separation, optical sorting, fully-automated high-speed sorting robots and other mechanical separation processes. This design maximizes recovery, allows for a rapidly changing material composition, and supports the end production of high-quality processed recyclables. 122 Arrow Road was the first MRF developed at the Campus. It began operations in 2010, processing mainly commercial material, and has since upgraded its advanced single stream processing system. 124 Arrow Road was purpose-built in 2013 for the City of Toronto single stream processing contract, with excess capacity for future opportunities. A dedicated material composition analysis center is also located on site which facilitates the sorting and analysis of inbound and outbound material.\n\nThe Campus serves the material recovery needs of millions of municipal households, as well as industrial, commercial and institutional recycling services, and processes hundreds of thousands of tons of recyclables per year.","Organic Processing Sites\n\nGFL recognizes the capture and composting of organic waste materials as a key driver of sustainable, long-term waste management solutions. That’s why we’ve invested in a series of modern, efficient organics processing facilities, located across our North American footprint, which recycle organic waste into high-quality compost, fertilizer, and other soil supplements.\n\nGFL’s organics collection and processing services provide an environmentally-conscious solution to the food, leaf and yard waste challenges of our commercial and residential customers. By receiving organic waste material, GFL is helping to divert precious reusable matter from landfills and giving the waste new life by processing it into nutrient-rich soil products. Another environmental benefit of keeping organic waste out of landfills is reduced emission of the harmful greenhouse gas methane.\n\nAs a leader in organic material processing, GFL handles over 400,000 tons of organic material at its facilities per year. Our compost is produced to a superior quality grade, and trusted for a variety of agricultural purposes by gardeners, landscapers and farmers across North America.\n\nGFL has designed and operates award-winning organic processing facilities, recognized for their composting system excellence. One of GFL’s largest facilities, in Delta, British Columbia, has recently been upgraded to include an agitated, aerated channel system, and incorporate the best control technology for aeration, material conveyance, process control and air treatment through a fully enclosed biofilter.\n\nIn processing material from municipalities in the lower mainland of British Columbia, the Delta facility plays an important role in supporting Metro Vancouver’s sustainability initiative to keep food waste out of landfills. The facility is co-located with GFL’s turf farm, which uses a large portion of the compost produced in the facility to grow turf that is commercially sold to local landscapers and golf courses. The finished compost is also mixed with sand to produce various soil amendment products for sale to local landscapers."]
