About

Between lower value and higher value. Between what is waste, and what is valuable. Between Sustainable transitions powered by chemistry At Aduro Clean Technologies we are in the business of between. Between what is difficult and what is possible. Between what is waste and what is valuable. Between is where everything we do happens. It's where our technology platform thrives. Our technologies have the potential to make more plastics recyclable, heavy oils more environmentally sustainable, and renewable fuels more cost-effective. And we are just getting started. Between modern life and wildlife, there is Aduro. Our vision is to enable harmonization of economic progress with environmental stewardship through the transformative power of chemistry so that both humanity and nature can prosper. Our life today Designed materials and technologies continue to shape our world. The results are wonderful. A digitally connected world, food and energy security, and state-of-the-art medical devices. The dilemma we face is in keeping up with the demands of our modern life and meeting the ongoing need for environmental stewardship Bringing harmony to modern life Yet, across the world and the recent decades, individuals and nations have become more environmentally aware. That awareness brings the understanding that modern life must consider all life, including that in the natural environment. More than a feature of modern life, technology is at its foundation. Technological advancement allows us to move beyond choosing between the needs of human society and the environment. Beyond either/or in which nature is an afterthought. Technology overcomes such limited thinking, offering possibilities to improve both our lives and our care of the environment. That's the inspiration for Aduro Clean Technologies. It powers our research. We look deep, broad, and, most importantly, between. There, we explore possibilities and deliver solutions for the good of both humanity and nature. One technology platform, a multitude of uses At the heart of this technology platform is its flexibility. Our repertoire of technologies can chemically recycle waste plastics; convert heavy crude and bitumen into lighter, more valuable oil; and transform renewable oils into higher-value fuels or renewable chemicals. And that’s just the beginning. As we explore the platform with our partners, new and innovative uses continue to reveal themselves. With Aduro Clean Technologies we don't have to choose between the benefits of modern life and an environmentally regenerative future. It’s the between that transforms things. And it can help change the world. Hydrochemolytic™ is an Aduro chemical technology that works with water to deconstruct robust molecules in plastics and heavy oil to smaller ones with better properties. A unique technology We build our solutions on a platform of innovative chemical technologies. The one that powers our capability to upgrade bitumen and upcycle plastics is Hydrochemolytic Technology, HCT. It is a unique, patented way to chemically persuade big, stubborn molecules in bitumen and plastics to undergo transformation into smaller ones, which are more cooperative as feedstocks for fuels and chemicals. HydrochemolyticTM works with water to make big, stubborn molecules smaller and more useful. Making big molecules small Some technologies do this by force, applying heat as a hammer that breaks the molecules apart, a technique known as cracking. Compounding the drawback of high energy is the complex mixture of molecular pieces caused by uncontrolled breakage. HCT is different. Simple, inexpensive metal compounds combined with the feedstock work like scissors applied selectively to cut bonds between carbon atoms. And at the lower temperatures used, heat is like a hand that holds and operates the scissors. This beneficially reduces energy costs and carbon emissions while improving product yields. And the controlled deconstruction of large molecules – polymers in plastics and asphaltenes in bitumen – permits better control of product quality. Taming the reactive, small fragments But having solved one problem, we face another. A fact in chemistry is that when the bond between two carbon atoms is broken, each becomes highly reactive and seeks to make new bonds. Whether caused by a hammer blow or cutting with scissors, this is a big problem. Those reactive carbons need to be quenched (stabilized). Conventional petroleum processing does this using specially designed catalysts to add hydrogen gas (H2). But besides its cost and complexity, this approach emits carbon from fossil fuels consumed to generate the H2 by a process called reforming. A distinctive feature of our HCT is stabilization achieved by adding a renewable H-source to the process. Materials like methanol, ethanol, glycerol, and even cellulose undergo reactions to give a result as if hydrogen were added – yet without the expensive catalyst, complicated process, and consumption of fossil fuels. Unique technologies from visionary scientists. This pairing of catalytic deconstruction of large molecules with stabilization by a renewable Hsource is unique. And it’s patented. It makes HCT efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally advantaged while generating useful products whose yields and quality are also advantaged compared with alternative, established approaches. But HCT is only one technology. It’s just the beginning. With breadth and depth of knowledge energized by imagination and passion for the betterment of the planet and its people, Aduro scientist-engineers actively ideate to create new technologies. Hydrochemolytic Technology is the new, greener way to unlock the value of waste plastics and heavy oils. But it’s more than that. It inspires us, and others, to see beyond what is in front of us. Between one technology platform and a multitude of uses, there is Aduro. Our technology platform is flexible. It efficiently and cost-effectively transforms end-of-life plastics and viscous bitumen into higher value materials. Market applications Our technology platform transforms waste plastics into 21st-century resources for the circular economy that recovers, regenerates, and reuses materials rather than discard them. It upgrades heavy crude, reducing its density and its viscosity to increase its value while minimizing environmental effects. It can even remove oxygen in renewable oils to make them more valuable and useful. Our technology platform means we don’t have to choose between the benefits of modern life and an environmentally sustainable future. Upgrading Bitumen Lighter crude from bitumen & heavy crude Pilot Program Upcycling Plastics Chemicals & fuels from plastic waste Pilot Program Upgrading Renewables Green fuels & chemicals from renewable oils Advanced Research Pilot Program We aspire to create a prosperous world that recovers and uses existing resources responsibly and reduces resource demands through regeneration, all with as little environmental impact as possible. Advanced Research Research fueled by knowledge, imagination, and curiosity is how we discovered and developed our current technology and are extending its reach. It’s how we’re expanding our technology platform and turning ideas into new solutions, a process we’re accelerating with our new state-of-the-art laboratory and growing team of scientist-engineers. Competitive Advantage Our research sets us apart and positions us in the market. It gives us the competitive edge to do everything we do more efficiently, more sustainably, offering better results with reduced environmental impact. Upgrading bitumen sustainably and economically. Compared to upgrading options currently available to producers, the application of Aduro HydrochemolyticTM Technology to bitumen provides environmental and competitive advantages due to lower emissions and resource demands. Icon A small blue flame icon Hydrochemolytic™ Bitumen Upgrading Imagine a more viable and economical approach for processing bitumen. Our technology can help build a more sustainable future. Alberta has been leading technological advancements related to the partial upgrading of bitumen since 2008. Our vision is for Canadian bitumen and heavy oil to be purchased and valued globally as cost-competitive and environmentally attractive. - Bryan Helfenbaum, Executive Director Advanced Hydrocarbons, Alberta Innovates Improving the quality and value at reduced cost Bitumen and heavy oil have high density and viscosity due to “heavy” components in them. For instance, elevated levels of asphaltenes in Alberta bitumen make it extremely dense and thick compared with light crudes. This precludes as-is transport by pipeline, leaving bitumen producers with two choices. One involves transforming bitumen into a light “synthetic crude” in complex operations that are capex- and energy-intensive. The other simply thins down the bitumen by dilution with expensive light hydrocarbons produced from lighter petroleum or natural gas. Hydrochemolytic Technology (HCT) improves the quality and value of bitumen to greatly reduce requirement for diluent so that producers can keep more money in their pockets and emissions out of the atmosphere. HCT efficiently deconstructs the heavy components into lighter molecules. It does so without relying on common technique of cracking at elevated temperatures, nor is it a hydrothermal approach or one that uses supercritical water. Instead, HCT involves chemical conversion. It works with water at lower temperatures through chemical reactions that selectively cut components like heavy asphaltenes into smaller pieces and then stabilize them. This lowers viscosity and density to reduce or eliminate the requirement for dilution. Beyond that, HCT-upgraded bitumen also has lower values for sulfur, metals, and acid number. Metals recovered through HCT-based upgrading, which include nickel and vanadium, potentially may generate additional revenue as high-value commodities for diverse applications including power-grid energy storage batteries. Environmental and competitive advantages An essential step in all bitumen upgrading, excluding the dilution approach, is stabilization of the lighter products produced. Instead of relying on hydrogen, H2, whose generation from fossil fuels results in carbon emissions, HCT uses an H-source that is renewable. Examples are ethanol, glycerol, and cellulose, which undergo reactions that have the benefit of H2 without consumption of fossil fuels. Moreover, the relatively low operating temperatures reduce energy requirement and associated carbon emissions. It is the future of bitumen extracted from oil sands in Alberta and can also be applied to upgrade bottom-of-the-barrel bitumen from vacuum distillation units found in refineries around the world. Upcycling waste plastic into 21st-century resources. We have developed a chemical platform that transforms low-value materials into higher-value materials with the aim of unlocking significant environmental and economic benefit. Icon A orange cyclical icon with two round arrows around a point Hydrochemolytic™ Plastic Upcycling Imagine a world without plastic pollution. Our technology can help build a cleaner future. Today, HCT is at the core of Aduro efforts in value regeneration from waste plastics. The power and importance of HCT is that it takes direct aim at PE, PP, and PS that, according to the United States EPA, represent over 70% of plastics in municipal solid waste streams. And no other technology can! - Marc Trygstad, CTO, Aduro Clean Technologies Turning waste plastic into 21st-century resources We transform waste plastics into 21st-century resources for the circular economy that recovers, regenerates, and reuses materials rather than discard them. Our patented Hydrochemolytic Technology can process a wider range of plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills or be incinerated, thereby regenerating higher volumes of waste plastics. The application of HCT to waste polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) can generate high-quality feed for naphtha crackers that produce starting materials for platform chemicals and more plastics. Polystyrene (PS), which is problematic for some chemical recycling technologies, also can be converted to valuable chemicals that include the starting material used to make PS. All of this reduces the demand for plastics produced from petroleum and carbon emissions from incineration of plastics. Unlocking potential from plastic pollution Plastics are diverse and their uses are beneficial. They are fantastic materials, indispensable to modern life. However, plastic waste is a growing global issue. Mechanical recycling can reuse only a small fraction of this waste as-is (like aluminum cans). A significant chunk of this waste, such as mixed plastic waste and contaminated packaging films, cannot be recycled mechanically and is either incinerated or discarded in the environment. Our regenerative chemical recycling technology picks up where mechanical recycling leaves off. It can convert difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into useful platform chemicals, feedstocks for the production of more plastics in a circular regime, and transportation fuels. Value regeneration from waste plastics Today, HCT is at the core of Aduro efforts in value regeneration from waste plastics. The power and importance of HCT is that it takes direct aim at the plastics that, according to the United States EPA, represent over 70% of plastics in municipal solid waste streams. Those plastics are PE, PP, and PS. No other technology can deal with all three and with the contaminants that come along in recovered waste plastics. But Aduro scientists are not content to stop there. They are working hard to expand the company’s technology platform to make better products and regenerate ever-higher amounts of waste plastic. Application of HCT to waste plastics has important advantages over chemical recycling alternatives. The regenerative chemistry innovation and its lower operating temperatures translate into lower emissions, higher purity products, and higher yields of useful hydrocarbon products from difficult-to-recycle plastics like foam cups and food packaging. And scalability means economies of scale do not limit its viability for deployment in remote localities with low volumes of plastic waste. Upgrading renewable oils to green fuels and chemicals. Our technology empowers a transition to clean energy. We transform renewable oils into valuable feedstocks for diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, and even for specialty chemicals. This diminishes the demand for petroleum and supports the drive to carbon neutrality. Icon A orange cyclical icon with two round arrows around a point Hydrochemolytic™ Renewables Upgrading Imagine the next generation in bio-fuels and specialty chemicals. Our technology can help build a greener future. Total global biofuel demand expands 20% over 2022-2027 in the main-case forecast. Growth in renewable diesel and biojet fuel consumption is almost entirely in advanced economies. Here, policies designed to reduce GHG emissions are driving demand because these fuels can be produced with low GHG emissions, blended at high levels and made from wastes and residues. In fact, nearly 70% of renewable diesel and biojet fuel came from wastes and residues in 2021. - International Energy Agency, Analysis Renewables 2022 Supporting the clean energy transition with chemicals The seeds or fruit of plants are the most important source of renewable oil. Some is recovered as a byproduct from conversion of corn to ethanol used in fuel. Other sources include oil extracted from non-food seed crops grown on marginal lands and off-spec canola and soybean oils. Still others include cooking oil, oil from grease traps in restaurants, and tallow from meat rendering. Unlocking the hydrocarbon content of these “surface oils” offers the possibility to reduce the demand for “below surface” crude oil (petroleum). But that is not easy because of the way oxygen is bound up in renewable oils. Removing that oxygen is necessary to maximize their usefulness as feedstocks for chemicals and fuels. The challenge is to do quickly what happened in the geological time frames that eliminated oxygen from petroleum. And that’s exactly what Aduro scientists figured out how to do. Chemical reactions that selectively eliminate oxygen from renewable oils produce high purity hydrocarbons that can serve as feedstocks for fuels and chemicals normally produced from petroleum. The process can be configured for stand- alone operation or integrated with existing biofuel operations to increase their efficiency. Inspiring others to inspire us. Between is everywhere we are.
